Jakarta Eyes TOD Partnership with Shenzhen Metro Group

The meeting discussed opportunities to develop a modern and sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD) concept to support a more advanced and integrated urban transport system in Jakarta.

"We want to benchmark the effectiveness of MRT systems in major cities worldwide. Shenzhen serves as a reference due to its operational efficiency and service quality," Pramono said on Thursday (4/23).

The Jakarta Provincial Government sees Shenzhen as a model for its success in transporting up to 13 million passengers per day across a network of around 635 kilometers, far exceeding MRT Jakarta, which serves about 128,000 daily passengers.

Pramono said the comparison offers valuable lessons to accelerate the development of MRT and TOD areas in Jakarta.

"This is urgent, as daily mobility into and out of Jakarta reaches around 4 million people. MRT development must be accelerated as a long-term solution to ease congestion and support integration across the greater metropolitan area," he noted.

President Director of PT MRT Jakarta, Tuhiyat, said the cooperation holds strategic value for TOD development, with Shenzhen's experience offering a useful reference for building an integrated rail system.

"This MoU marks a step toward addressing challenges in modern cities while supporting future economic growth," he asserted.

Meanwhile, Deputy Party Secretary and General Manager of Shenzhen Metro Group, Huang Liping, said Jakarta is on the right track in prioritizing TOD as the backbone of urban mobility.

"Our experience shows that when metro planning is integrated from the outset, it not only moves people but also shapes the economy, urban space, and property values," he said.

He expressed support for stronger cooperation between Jakarta and Shenzhen in sharing best practices to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable city.

The meeting also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MRT Jakarta and Shenzhen Metro Group to develop TOD areas and integrated urban transport systems.
